In the 2024/25 marketing year, the global barley market continues adapting to climate challenges, changing demand patterns, and geopolitical instability. The world’s top barley producers traditionally include the European Union, Russia, Australia, Canada, Türkiye, and Ukraine. Together, these countries account for the majority of global barley production and strongly influence international grain trade dynamics.
Analysts note that global barley production in 2024/25 is experiencing a moderate decline due to drought conditions in parts of Australia and Eastern Europe. At the same time, the European Union maintains its leading position thanks to large cultivation areas and stable demand from the livestock and brewing industries. Australia remains one of the key barley exporters, although weather-related risks continue to affect crop yields.
Despite wartime challenges and reduced planting areas, Ukraine continues to rank among the important global barley producers. According to industry estimates, the country harvested approximately 5.6–5.8 million tons of barley in 2024. China, Spain, Lebanon, and Middle Eastern countries remain the primary destinations for Ukrainian barley exports. Experts emphasize that the stable operation of the Black Sea export corridor continues to support Ukraine’s export potential despite ongoing military risks.
Market specialists believe competition among leading barley-producing countries will intensify in the coming years due to climate risks, changing feed consumption patterns, and global trade restrictions. Nevertheless, barley remains a strategically important crop for both the feed industry and brewing sector, ensuring stable long-term demand on the global market.
