Ukraine's Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food expects winter wheat acreage for the 2027 harvest to decline. According to Minister Taras Vysotskyi, this trend is already evident, although the final scale of the reduction will become clear only after the autumn sowing campaign is completed. Detailed data collection will begin in September, with more accurate estimates expected in early October.
At the same time, no significant changes are expected for other winter crops. Winter rapeseed sowing is already underway, making substantial acreage changes unlikely, while winter barley area is also expected to remain broadly stable, with only minor fluctuations.
The ministry stresses that a reduction in winter wheat acreage does not threaten Ukraine's food security. Domestic wheat consumption is around 6 million tonnes annually, whereas wheat production in recent years has reached 23–25 million tonnes, leaving a substantial export surplus.
It is still too early to make firm forecasts for the 2027 spring planting campaign. However, the ministry expects a return to the recent trend of expanding oilseed crops, particularly soybeans and sunflower, while corn acreage may decline. These shifts are expected to reflect crop profitability and the changing logistics and export environment.
