Ukraine continues to develop its industrial hemp sector. AGROTRADE has completed the crop harvest in the Chernihiv region and reported achieving 100% of its planned yield target. This season, farms within the company’s sixth cluster allocated 149 hectares to industrial hemp, mainly on lighter and less productive soils. Compared with last year, the area decreased by 55%, which the company attributes to crop rotation.
The season had a challenging start. Cool weather in May slowed plant development during the early growth stages. However, the crops later recovered and produced the expected harvest. Based on experience from the previous season, the company also adjusted its cultivation technology, paying greater attention to plant nutrition and seed quality. According to its agronomists, higher-quality seed with better reproduction characteristics offers stronger yield potential and reduces the proportion of undesirable plants.
The company’s experience suggests that industrial hemp can be an attractive option for farms with lighter and less productive soils. However, the crop requires careful field and variety selection, appropriate seeding rates, balanced nutrition and particularly effective weed control during the early stages of vegetation. Its production potential therefore depends not only on weather conditions but also on proper crop management.
Industrial hemp nevertheless remains a niche crop: it accounted for only around 0.4% of AGROTRADE’s planned crop structure for 2026. After harvesting, one of the key issues is finding the most economically viable sales channel. The company is currently assessing market conditions before deciding how to sell this year’s crop. This highlights one of the main characteristics of niche crops: potentially high added value needs to be supported by access to processing capacity and a stable market.
