A large-scale bee die-off has been recorded in Ukraine’s Kirovohrad region, affecting apiaries in several rural communities. According to preliminary estimates, approximately 32 million bees died in two villages, while 14 beekeepers suffered losses. Out of more than 800 bee colonies, nearly half were partially or completely destroyed, creating significant challenges for local beekeeping operations.

According to beekeepers, the mass mortality began shortly after pea fields were treated during the flowering period. This stage is particularly sensitive because bees actively collect nectar and pollen, making them highly vulnerable to improper pesticide application. Environmental experts and local community representatives believe insecticide use may have contributed to the incident, although definitive conclusions will depend on laboratory test results.

Samples of bees, plants, and soil have already been collected for analysis. The investigation is expected to determine whether pesticide application regulations were violated and whether concentrations of active substances exceeded permitted levels. If responsibility is confirmed, affected beekeepers may seek compensation for their losses.

Specialists emphasize that such incidents highlight the importance of cooperation between farmers and beekeepers. Early notification of field treatments, the use of pollinator-friendly crop protection products, and strict compliance with pesticide application regulations remain essential for protecting bee populations. Pollinators play a critical role in agricultural production, supporting crop yields, biodiversity, and the long-term sustainability of farming systems.
